Founded in 1990, the Saudi Payments Network (SPAN) is the only automated payments network in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It links all Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and Point Of Sale (POS) terminals throughout the country to a central payment switch which in turn processes and re-routes the acquirer financial transactions to the card issuer whether it is a local bank, VISA, AMEX or MasterCard. SPAN also caters for processing and routing transactions made outside the Kingdom through external networks such as GCCNet member switches.
All banks in Saudi Arabia are required by the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) to issue ATM cards fully compatible with the network and all services are provided to the end customer free of charge, regardless of the ATM or POS Terminal used, its operator, or the customer's card issuer. This move aims to encourage Saudi citizens and foreign residents to fully utilize the Kingdom's banking system. The movement towards electronic transactions has reduced the overall demand for bank notes and increased uptake in banking facilities, which in turn led to increased deposits.
Since the launching of SPAN, the total number of transactions, SPAN cards, ATMs and POS terminals, have been increasing on an annual basis. There are now more than 9,500 ATMs and 76,000 POS terminals connected to the network. In 2008, the total number of transaction that went through SPAN was more than 459 million, with a total amount of 235 Billion Saudi Riyals (62.4 Billion US Dollars).
